Roberto Galeazzi was not an engineer: he was an inventor from La Spezia, where the sea was both livelihood and mystery. At the dawn of the twentieth century the world was conquering peaks and skies, yet the great depths remained inviolable: every attempt ended with the same sentence. Galeazzi, an inventor consumed by a single obsession, understood what others could not see: the enemy was not water — it was pressure.
In 1926, Roberto Galeazzi patented the spherical structure, an engineering principle destined to redefine how humans could withstand the crushing pressures of the deep sea. Based on this same principle, the Bathyscaphic Tower, an invention of Galeazzi’s, made history in 1932 when, aboard the Artiglio, it enabled the location and recovery of the cargo from the wreck of the ocean liner SS Egypt, lying at a depth of approximately 130 metres in the English Channel (United Kingdom). The precious cargo, consisting of gold bars, would be worth an estimated $500 million today.
An undertaking considered impossible at the time, the recovery made international headlines and earned Galeazzi the nickname “the Wizard of the Deep.”
Roberto Galeazzi died in 1956. His legacy was taken up and kept alive by his son, Roberto Galeazzi junior. And in 1988 the company was absorbed by DRASS and, in the reordering of century-old archives, the letters, the drawings and the specifications were scattered: the written memory faded away.
When Squale partnered with DRASS in 2021, collectors took notice. That first collaboration sold out all five hundred pieces, reigniting conversation around the legendary deep-sea instrument.
Now, in 2026, marking a century since the spherical case patent, the second chapter arrives: a timepiece that honours not nostalgia but purposeful engineering—a tool that once belonged on the wrists of those who ventured into the abyss and trusted it with their lives.
